₹44,711 Crore Highway Project Cleared in Odisha to Upgrade Kurumpuri–Raj Khariar Corridor

The Government of India has cleared a ₹44,711 crore highway development project in Odisha, aimed at upgrading the Kurumpuri–Raj Khariar stretch spanning approximately 103.52 km, in a major step toward strengthening regional connectivity and boosting infrastructure capacity in the state.

The project involves the upgradation of the existing corridor to higher-capacity highway standards, including improvements in road geometry, pavement strength, and safety infrastructure. The stretch is strategically located in western Odisha, connecting relatively underdeveloped districts and improving their access to key economic and transport hubs.

This approval is part of a broader infrastructure push by the Centre, which has sanctioned large-scale road development projects across Odisha covering both national and state highways, along with additional works under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF).

The upgraded corridor is expected to reduce travel time, enhance freight efficiency, and improve logistics connectivity, particularly benefiting sectors such as agriculture, mining, and small-scale industries in the region. Improved road conditions will also facilitate smoother movement of goods toward major consumption centres and ports.

In addition to widening and strengthening works, the project will incorporate modern highway engineering features, including better drainage systems, improved junction design, and enhanced road safety measures to support higher traffic volumes.

The investment also aligns with the government’s ongoing focus on developing backward and interior regions through infrastructure-led growth, ensuring better integration of remote areas into the national transport network.

Once completed, the Kurumpuri–Raj Khariar highway is expected to play a crucial role in stimulating economic activity, improving accessibility, and supporting long-term regional development in Odisha.
