Indian Railways Approves ₹362 Crore Kavach Expansion Across Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir

Indian Railways has approved a ₹362 crore project for the expansion of the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system across key railway routes in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, marking another major step in strengthening rail safety infrastructure across northern India.

The project has been sanctioned by Northern Railway and will cover important rail corridors falling under the Firozpur Division. The expansion is aimed at improving operational safety, reducing the risk of collisions, and enhancing train monitoring capabilities on strategically important routes in the region.

According to officials, the approved work includes installation of Kavach technology across nearly 446 route kilometres and around 10 railway stations spread across Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. The project will involve deployment of onboard locomotive systems, trackside infrastructure, communication equipment, signalling integration, and centralised monitoring systems.

Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to prevent train collisions by automatically applying brakes if a locomotive pilot fails to respond to warnings or violates signal protocols. Developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the technology is capable of controlling train speed, preventing signal passing at danger (SPAD), and enabling safer train operations during adverse weather conditions such as fog.

The latest expansion project forms part of Indian Railways’ nationwide strategy to accelerate deployment of Kavach technology on high-density and high-priority rail corridors. The Ministry of Railways has significantly increased investment in signalling modernisation and train protection systems following recent efforts to strengthen operational safety across the rail network.

Officials stated that the Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir routes hold strategic importance for both passenger and freight movement, including connectivity to border areas and defence logistics corridors. The implementation of advanced train protection systems on these routes is expected to improve operational reliability and reduce accident risks on busy railway sections.

The project will include installation of Kavach-enabled equipment on locomotives operating across the identified routes, along with radio communication systems, optical fibre connectivity, signalling interfaces, and integrated control mechanisms required for real-time train movement monitoring.

Indian Railways has been rapidly scaling up deployment of Kavach technology across multiple zones as part of its broader railway modernisation programme. The government has identified Kavach as a core safety technology for future rail operations and plans to implement it extensively on high-density routes over the coming years.

Railway experts believe the wider adoption of Kavach could significantly enhance operational safety standards in India’s railway network by reducing human error-related incidents and improving automatic train control capabilities across both passenger and freight operations.
