Indian Railways to Create Passenger Holding Areas at 76 Stations to Ease Congestion and Improve Safety

Indian Railways to Create Passenger Holding Areas at 76 Stations to Ease Congestion and Improve Safety

The Indian Railways has announced plans to develop dedicated passenger holding areas at 76 high-footfall railway stations across the country, as part of a broader strategy to manage crowd pressure and enhance passenger safety.

The initiative is aimed at decongesting platforms, especially during peak travel periods, by creating designated waiting zones outside platform areas where passengers can be accommodated in a more organised manner. These holding areas will help regulate the flow of passengers and prevent overcrowding at stations.

According to the plan, these spaces will be equipped with essential amenities such as seating arrangements, drinking water, toilets, ticketing facilities, information display systems, and security infrastructure, ensuring both comfort and efficient crowd management.

The move also introduces stricter access control measures, under which only passengers with confirmed reserved tickets may be allowed direct entry to platforms. Those without confirmed bookings or holding waitlisted tickets will be required to remain in designated holding areas until their travel status is validated or space becomes available.

A pilot model at New Delhi Railway Station has already demonstrated positive results in easing congestion, supported by features such as automatic ticket vending machines, surveillance systems, public address systems, and real-time train information displays.

The broader rollout will also integrate technology-driven solutions, including AI-enabled monitoring and coordinated control systems, to improve crowd regulation, safety, and operational efficiency across major stations.

This initiative forms part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise station infrastructure and improve passenger experience, particularly at locations that witness heavy daily footfall and seasonal surges in travel demand.
