JNPA Reports Improvement in Container Movement, Reduction in CFS-Bound Cargo

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has reported significant improvement in container movement operations at the port, with a notable reduction in the number of containers being diverted to Container Freight Stations (CFS), indicating smoother cargo evacuation and improved logistics efficiency.

The port authority stated that coordinated operational measures, better yard management, streamlined evacuation processes, and stronger stakeholder coordination have helped ease congestion and improve cargo flow across India’s busiest container gateway.

According to JNPA, the reduction in CFS-bound containers reflects improved direct port delivery systems and faster cargo clearance mechanisms, helping optimise container handling operations within the port ecosystem. Efficient evacuation of import and export cargo remains critical for maintaining vessel turnaround efficiency and reducing logistics delays.

Container Freight Stations typically serve as off-dock facilities for customs clearance, temporary storage, cargo consolidation, and distribution. However, excessive diversion of containers to CFS facilities can increase logistics costs and transit time if port congestion rises. Improved direct movement systems are therefore viewed as a positive operational development for trade and supply chain efficiency.

JNPA handles a major share of India’s container cargo traffic and plays a vital role in the country’s import-export supply chain. The port serves manufacturing, industrial, automotive, engineering, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods sectors through extensive domestic and international shipping connectivity.

Officials indicated that continuous monitoring of yard occupancy, vessel scheduling, container dwell time, rail evacuation, and truck movement has helped stabilise operations despite rising cargo volumes. Improved coordination among terminal operators, shipping lines, customs authorities, transporters, and logistics stakeholders has also contributed to smoother cargo handling.

India’s maritime and logistics sector has been undergoing rapid transformation through investments in port modernisation, multimodal connectivity, dedicated freight corridors, digital logistics systems, and cargo handling automation. The government’s Sagarmala and PM Gati Shakti initiatives continue to focus heavily on improving logistics efficiency and reducing supply chain costs.

JNPA has also been expanding its infrastructure capabilities through terminal capacity augmentation, road and rail connectivity upgrades, digital port community systems, and integrated logistics development projects. The port is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting India’s trade growth and manufacturing expansion.

Industry experts noted that efficient container evacuation and lower dwell times are essential for maintaining competitiveness in global trade logistics. Congestion reduction at major ports directly improves shipping schedules, inventory movement, freight reliability, and overall supply chain productivity.

The latest operational update from JNPA is viewed positively by logistics stakeholders as India continues strengthening its maritime infrastructure and trade facilitation systems to support rising cargo volumes, export growth, and integrated multimodal logistics development.
