Mumbai Metro Lines 2B & 9, Twin Tunnel and Pod Taxi Projects Set for 7 April Launch

A major set of urban mobility projects in Mumbai including Metro Lines 2B and 9, the Thane–Borivali twin tunnel, and the BKC pod taxi system are now slated for launch on April 7, following a rescheduling of earlier inauguration plans.

The projects were initially expected to be unveiled around April 3, but the event was postponed due to scheduling constraints involving key officials. With all systems and infrastructure already completed and ready, authorities have now aligned the launch for April 7.

The Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Phase I) stretch between Dahisar and Kashigaon (around 4.5 km) is among the key highlights. The corridor includes four stations and is designed to significantly improve east–west connectivity in the Mira-Bhayandar region, while also integrating with Metro Line 7, enabling smoother suburban travel.

Alongside this, Metro Line 2B will also see its initial operational rollout. The line is expected to enhance connectivity across important suburban corridors, easing congestion and offering faster transit options for daily commuters.

Another major component is the launch of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the ambitious Thane–Borivali twin tunnel project, an approximately 11.8 km underground corridor that is expected to cut travel time between the two locations to nearly 15 minutes, dramatically improving cross-city mobility.

In addition, groundwork will begin for the pod taxi project at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), with an estimated investment of over ₹1,000 crore. The project represents India’s move toward next-generation, automated urban transit systems, aimed at reducing congestion in one of Mumbai’s busiest business districts.

Together, these developments mark a significant milestone in Mumbai’s infrastructure expansion strategy, focusing on multi-modal integration, reduced travel time, and sustainable urban mobility solutions.
