Nigeria Partners with DP World and AD Ports Group to Launch New National Shipping Line

Nigeria Partners with DP World and AD Ports Group to Launch New National Shipping Line

Nigeria is moving ahead with plans to establish a new national shipping line, with strategic partnerships involving global logistics majors DP World and AD Ports Group.

The initiative is part of the country’s broader efforts to revive a national carrier decades after the collapse of the Nigerian National Shipping Line in 1995, and to strengthen its position in global maritime trade.

The proposed shipping line is expected to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework, leveraging the global expertise of DP World and AD Ports Group in port operations, logistics, and maritime services. Both companies bring extensive international experience, with DP World operating a wide network of terminals across multiple continents and AD Ports Group actively expanding its footprint in ports, logistics, and digital trade infrastructure.

According to officials from Nigeria’s Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, discussions with these partners have progressed significantly, with the aim of creating a commercially viable and globally competitive national shipping carrier.

The new entity is expected to play a crucial role in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on foreign shipping lines, retaining a larger share of maritime revenue within the country, and improving control over its import-export logistics. It is also likely to support job creation, local capacity building, and increased participation of indigenous operators in the shipping ecosystem.

The move aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to develop its marine and blue economy, enhance port efficiency, and strengthen logistics connectivity across regional and international trade routes. Through partnerships with global players, the country aims to build a modern, technology-driven shipping and logistics ecosystem capable of supporting long-term economic growth.

Once operational, the new national shipping line is expected to mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s maritime sector, positioning it as a stronger player in global trade while improving efficiency and competitiveness across its supply chain.
