Prayagraj Metro Project Expanded to 60 Km; Airport and Sangam to Get Key Stations

The proposed metro project in Prayagraj has been significantly scaled up, with the network length now planned at around 60 km, up from the earlier proposal of approximately 44 km. The expansion is part of ongoing revisions to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), aimed at improving connectivity and increasing ridership across the city.

A major highlight of the revised plan is the inclusion of Prayagraj Airport and the Triveni Sangam as key nodes in the metro network. The addition of the airport route follows central government guidance to integrate air connectivity into urban transit systems, ensuring seamless multi-modal transport access.

The expanded network will include around 45 metro stations, with at least six new stations added as part of the extension. The alignment is also being planned to connect important city zones, including residential areas, transport hubs, and religious-tourism circuits.

Two primary corridors are proposed under the project. The first corridor is expected to run from Bamrauli (airport side) to Jhunsi, while the second will connect Shantipuram to Chhivki, covering key urban and peripheral zones of the city. The overall project cost is estimated to exceed ₹12,000 crore, reflecting the scale of infrastructure development planned.
In a notable integration move, authorities are also planning a combined metro and ropeway station near the Sangam, aimed at improving accessibility for pilgrims and tourists, especially during large gatherings such as the Kumbh and Magh Mela.

The expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve last-mile connectivity, and support urban growth, while also enhancing connectivity to key religious and transport landmarks. With work on track-laying expected to begin soon, the project marks a major step toward modernising urban mobility in Prayagraj.
