The Telangana government has sought the Centre’s approval for the proposed ₹38,595 crore Phase-II expansion of the Hyderabad Metro, aiming to significantly strengthen urban mobility infrastructure across the rapidly expanding city.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy raised the proposal during a meeting with Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi, requesting early approval and central participation in the project as a joint venture between the state and Union governments.
According to the proposal submitted by the state government, Phase II will cover 122.9 km across seven corridors, making it one of the largest metro expansion plans currently under consideration in India. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project has already been submitted to the Centre.
The expansion has been proposed in response to Hyderabad’s rapid urban growth and rising commuter demand. The state government stated that the existing metro system requires substantial augmentation to support future transportation needs and reduce traffic congestion across major urban corridors.
The proposed Phase-II network includes extensions of existing metro lines along with new connectivity corridors linking emerging residential, commercial, and transport hubs. The project is expected to improve integration between different parts of the city while enhancing access to key economic and infrastructure zones.
During the discussions, Revanth Reddy also highlighted that the Telangana government has taken over Phase-I operations of Hyderabad Metro from Larsen & Toubro, which earlier operated the project through L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited. According to the state government, bringing Phase I under government control is expected to streamline implementation of future expansion phases and improve integration across the metro network.
The Chief Minister additionally urged the Centre to support the proposed Rajiv Gandhi International Airport–Bharat Future City corridor under the upcoming Phase-III expansion plan. Officials stated that the DPR for this corridor has also been prepared and submitted.
The proposed expansion forms part of Telangana’s broader urban infrastructure strategy focused on strengthening mass transit systems, reducing dependence on road transport, and supporting long-term metropolitan growth. Once approved, the project is expected to substantially enhance public transport capacity and improve connectivity across Hyderabad’s expanding urban regions.
