Vijay’s Wife Sangeetha Files for Divorce, Alleges Affair

Sangeetha Vijay has filed a divorce petition against actor-politician Vijay in a Chengalpattu court.

A divorce petition has been filed before the District Court in Chengalpattu seeking dissolution of marriage between Vijay (C. Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar) and his wife Sangeetha Vijay.

The petition, filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b), (d) read with Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, alleges infidelity and mental cruelty.

Marriage Details and Allegations

According to the petition, the marriage was first registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998. A ceremonial wedding was later solemnised on August 25, 1999, at Rajah Muthiah Mandram in Egmore, Chennai, following Hindu customs.

Sangeetha, 48, has stated that the early years of marriage were cordial and harmonious. However, the petition alleges that in April 2021 she discovered that Vijay was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress.

The petition claims this caused “deep emotional pain and mental suffering,” describing it as betrayal and violation of marital trust. It further alleges continued association despite assurances, resulting in mental cruelty, emotional neglect, public humiliation via social media posts, and constructive desertion.

Attempts at Reconciliation Failed

The document notes that efforts at reconciliation between September 2021 and February 2022, and again between August 2024 and February 2025 — including counselling and personal discussions — did not yield an amicable settlement.

The petitioner has sought:

  • Decree of dissolution of marriage
  • Permanent alimony in line with Vijay’s income and status
  • Right to reside in the matrimonial home in Neelankarai or alternative accommodation
  • In-camera proceedings to protect privacy

About Their Marriage

Vijay married Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil, in 1999, before he rose to superstardom in Tamil cinema and later entered politics as chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The couple has two children — a son and a daughter — and have largely maintained a low-profile personal life over the years.

Past Rumours and Political Context

Speculation about marital discord had surfaced periodically, particularly when Sangeetha was absent from public and political events associated with Vijay’s growing political presence.

Meanwhile, Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan has faced release hurdles after certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification. The project remains unreleased following legal proceedings.

As the matter is now before the court, further developments are awaited.
