₹631 Crore Southern Bypass Approved for Jhansi to Link Five National Highways

The Government of India has approved a ₹631 crore greenfield southern bypass project in Jhansi, aimed at significantly easing urban congestion while strengthening highway connectivity across the Bundelkhand region.

The proposed four-lane bypass, spanning approximately 15.5–15.6 km, will connect NH-44 and NH-39, running from Bangay Khas village to Orchha Tigela. The project will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.

Jhansi currently serves as a key junction where five major national highways—NH-44, NH-39, NH-27, NH-539, and NH-552—intersect, leading to heavy traffic congestion within the city. The new bypass is designed to divert through-traffic, especially heavy vehicles, away from the urban core, thereby reducing congestion, pollution, and travel delays.

The project is expected to deliver multiple connectivity benefits. It will facilitate seamless inter-state movement between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, while also improving access to nearby regions such as Orchha. By eliminating the need for vehicles to pass through city roads, the bypass will help cut travel distance and time, resulting in fuel savings and improved logistics efficiency.

From an economic perspective, the bypass is likely to play a crucial role in supporting industrial and logistics development in Bundelkhand, particularly with upcoming industrial zones in and around Jhansi. Improved connectivity will enable smoother movement of goods, reduce transportation costs, and enhance the attractiveness of the region for investment.
The project is also expected to boost tourism in Orchha, a heritage destination, by providing faster and more convenient access for visitors. Better road infrastructure will support increased tourist inflow, benefiting local businesses and allied sectors.

Once completed, the Jhansi southern bypass will emerge as a critical infrastructure link, decongesting the city while integrating multiple national highways into a more efficient and high-capacity corridor.
