BEML Unveils India’s First Indigenous 35-Tonne Electric Dump Truck

BEML Limited has unveiled India’s first indigenously designed 35-tonne electric dump truck at its Mysuru complex, marking a major milestone in the country’s push toward sustainable mining and heavy equipment electrification.

The electric dump truck was flagged off by Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy, in the presence of senior officials and industry partners. The development reflects BEML’s focus on indigenisation, advanced engineering, and environmentally responsible technologies, aligned with India’s broader ESG and decarbonisation goals.

Designed and developed entirely in India, the machine is built to global performance and safety standards and is specifically engineered for high-demand mining applications, where equipment operates under intensive, stop-start duty cycles.

The dump truck features a payload capacity of 35 tonnes and a gross vehicle weight of approximately 60 tonnes, making it suitable for heavy-duty operations. It is powered by a high-efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), delivering an energy efficiency of 85–90%, significantly higher than conventional diesel-powered counterparts.
A key highlight of the machine is its advanced electric drivetrain, supported by a 300 kWh lithium-ion battery, which is designed to handle demanding mining conditions. The system is equipped with a Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) with liquid cooling, ensuring optimal temperature control, improved safety, and enhanced battery life.

The truck also incorporates a Regenerative Braking System (RBS), which captures and reuses energy during braking particularly beneficial in downhill mining operations thereby improving overall efficiency and energy utilisation.

In addition to environmental benefits such as zero tailpipe emissions, the electric dump truck offers significant economic advantages. BEML estimates 60–70% savings in energy costs and 40–60% reduction in operating costs compared to diesel-powered trucks, along with lower maintenance requirements due to fewer mechanical components.
Highlighting the significance of the launch, the company noted that this development represents a defining step toward green mining solutions and indigenous manufacturing capabilities, positioning India as a growing player in next-generation heavy equipment technologies.

The introduction of this electric dump truck reinforces BEML’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and its strategy to deliver clean, high-performance solutions for the mining and infrastructure sectors, while supporting the global transition toward sustainable industrial practices.
