Mumbai Expands Metro Network with Launch of Lines 9 and 2B

Mumbai’s urban transport network has received a major boost with the inauguration of Metro Lines 9 and 2B, marking a significant expansion of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) metro system and pushing its operational length beyond the 100 km milestone.

The newly opened corridors include Metro Line 9 (Dahisar East to Kashigaon), a crucial link extending metro connectivity into the Mira-Bhayandar region and Thane district and the first operational stretch of Metro Line 2B (Mandale to Diamond Garden), which brings metro access to key parts of Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.

The inauguration was carried out by Maharashtra’s leadership, with services opened to the public shortly after, signaling a major step forward in the city’s effort to build a fully integrated, multi-corridor metro network.

A key highlight of this expansion is improved regional connectivity. Line 9 provides the first metro access to Thane district, while Line 2B strengthens east–west movement across dense urban corridors. Together, these lines are expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time for daily commuters.

The integration of these corridors also enhances network efficiency. Metro Line 7 is now linked with Line 9, enabling seamless travel from Andheri to Kashigaon, while Line 2B improves access across the eastern suburban belt. This interconnected system is designed to reduce dependence on road transport and streamline passenger movement across the city.

With this expansion, Mumbai’s metro network has become the second-largest in India after Delhi-NCR, reflecting the rapid pace of infrastructure development in the region. Future phases of both lines are already under construction, with additional sections expected to be commissioned over the next few years, further strengthening the city’s urban mobility framework.

The launch of Lines 9 and 2B represents a key milestone in Mumbai’s long-term vision of developing a high-capacity, sustainable, and integrated public transport system, aimed at supporting the city’s growing population and economic activity.
