Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlights the role of scientific innovation and youth empowerment during National Science Day celebrations at Vigyan Bhawan.

On the occasion of National Science Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to research, innovation, and scientific advancement, calling scientific curiosity the driving force behind national growth.

In a message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the day celebrates the spirit of discovery that continues to propel India forward in global science and technology leadership.

Celebrating the Legacy of Sir C.V. Raman

National Science Day is observed every year on February 28 to commemorate the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect by renowned physicist C. V. Raman in 1928. His discovery on the scattering of light placed Indian research firmly on the global scientific map and later earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 — making him the first Asian Nobel laureate in the sciences.

The Raman Effect remains a cornerstone in the field of spectroscopy and continues to influence scientific research worldwide.

Strengthening India’s Research Ecosystem

PM Modi emphasized that India is determined to empower its youth, strengthen research ecosystems, and harness science and technology for both national development and global good. He highlighted the need to encourage innovation across universities, research institutions, and emerging startups.

The national-level celebrations this year are being held at Vigyan Bhawan under the aegis of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology. The event began with special lectures chaired by Principal Scientific Adviser Ajay Kumar Sood.

India’s Expanding Scientific Frontiers

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended greetings to scientists and innovators, acknowledging their contribution to expanding India’s capabilities in:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Space Technology
  • Defence Systems
  • Information Technology
  • Healthcare Innovation
  • Agricultural Research
  • Renewable Energy

These advancements are not only strengthening the economy but also enhancing national security and inspiring the next generation of researchers.

Inspiring Young India

Over the years, National Science Day has evolved into a nationwide movement promoting scientific temper, research excellence, and innovation-led growth. Schools, colleges, research institutions, and government bodies organize seminars, exhibitions, and science fairs to inspire young minds.

As India moves toward its vision of becoming a global innovation hub, leaders across the political spectrum reiterated that science and technology will remain central to achieving sustainable development and economic resilience.
