In a significant step toward ensuring rail safety, Indian Railways carried out a high-level inspection of the rail bridge over the Ravi River on the Kathua-Madhopur section in Jammu & Kashmir.
The inspection was conducted by senior officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager and the Commissioner of Railway Safety, focusing on the structural integrity, load-bearing capacity, and long-term stability of the bridge considered a vital link connecting Jammu & Kashmir with the rest of India.
This review gains importance as the bridge had sustained damage during heavy rainfall in 2025, and is currently undergoing repair and reinforcement work. Engineers carried out a detailed technical assessment of pillars, foundations, and overall durability to ensure the structure meets stringent safety standards.
Beyond the bridge itself, the inspection team also examined track alignment, sleeper conditions, and signalling systems, ensuring that the entire stretch is safe for uninterrupted train operations.
Officials placed strong emphasis on monsoon preparedness, directing field teams to strengthen emergency response systems and ensure readiness for extreme weather conditions. This includes contingency planning for flooding, structural stress, and rapid-response mechanisms.
The bridge forms a crucial part of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which aims to enhance connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. Any disruption on this route could impact both passenger and freight movement, making safety inspections like this critical to maintaining operational reliability.
The inspection reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on proactive safety audits, infrastructure resilience, and reliability, particularly in geographically challenging and climate-sensitive regions.
