“Bangladesh First” Cry: Tarique Rahman Signals Balanced Foreign Policy Approach

Tarique Rahman outlines “Bangladesh First” foreign policy during his first press conference as Prime Minister-designate.

Prime Minister-designate Tarique Rahman on Saturday outlined what he described as a “Bangladesh First” foreign policy, signalling that his administration would prioritise national interests over country-specific alignments.

Speaking at his maiden press conference following the sweeping victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the national elections, Rahman emphasised that his government would pursue a balanced diplomatic strategy while dealing with neighbouring countries, including India, Pakistan and China.

🇧🇩 “Bangladesh’s Interests Come First”

Addressing a question on future ties with New Delhi, Rahman avoided directly naming India but reiterated that Bangladesh’s interests would remain paramount.

“Our foreign policy is based on protecting the interests of Bangladesh and its people,” he said, adding that the country’s national priorities would guide diplomatic decisions.

The BNP secured 212 of the 297 parliamentary seats, gaining a two-thirds majority. The Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies won 77 seats, while the Awami League did not contest the polls.

Rahman is expected to take oath within the next few days.

🌏 Balancing India, China, Pakistan and the US

Observers believe Rahman faces a delicate diplomatic balancing act. Bangladesh maintains strong economic and trade ties with India, while China remains a significant investor in infrastructure projects. Pakistan has also increased engagement in recent years.

Sources indicate that Rahman recognises the need for stable relations with all major regional players, particularly at a time when Bangladesh’s economy is grappling with inflation and fiscal pressures.

To stabilise the economy, the new administration will require uninterrupted supply chains, foreign investment, and favourable trade conditions — factors that depend heavily on regional cooperation.

🏛 Economic Revival and Governance Challenges

During the press conference, Rahman identified economic revival as his top priority.

“We face serious challenges in restoring economic stability, ensuring law and order, and strengthening governance,” he said.

Bangladesh has experienced economic strain in recent years, with rising prices and financial pressures affecting households nationwide.

⚖ Internal Political Dynamics

Rahman’s “balanced approach” may also be tested domestically. While the BNP holds a commanding majority, the influence of right-leaning allies like Jamaat-e-Islami could complicate regional diplomacy, especially regarding India.

Political analysts note that managing internal alliances while maintaining steady foreign ties will be one of the early tests for the incoming Prime Minister.

🤝 Possible Diplomatic Signals

There are indications that Rahman may invite leaders from neighbouring countries, including Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, to his swearing-in ceremony as a symbolic gesture of balanced diplomacy.

Experts suggest that Rahman’s approach resembles other “nation-first” policy frameworks seen globally, emphasising sovereignty while maintaining strategic partnerships.

📢 Call for Unity

Rahman concluded his address by urging unity and adherence to the rule of law.

“We must remain united and uphold the will of the people. Peace, discipline and justice must prevail for everyone,” he said.

As Bangladesh prepares for a new political chapter, all eyes will be on how the incoming government navigates regional relationships while addressing domestic challenges.
